What "functional" testing actually means
The blood is analyzed in the same accredited laboratories used by conventional medicine. What differs is scope and interpretation: more markers, read as a connected system, and compared against ranges associated with feeling and functioning well rather than ranges that merely exclude disease.
What a functional panel typically adds
- Fasting insulin and HOMA-IR alongside glucose and A1C
- Full thyroid panel including Free T3, Reverse T3, and antibodies
- Advanced lipids — ApoB and lipoprotein(a) rather than LDL-C alone
- Inflammatory markers such as hs-CRP and homocysteine

Pattern reading is the real difference
Individually, a ferritin of 22, a Free T3 in the bottom quartile, and a fasting insulin of 12 might each be dismissed. Together, in someone with fatigue and hair thinning, they describe a coherent and addressable picture.
That is the case for measuring markers on a single draw rather than one at a time across separate visits: they interpret each other.
Honest limits
Wider testing produces more results, and some will fall marginally outside a range without meaning anything. Optimal ranges are clinical judgments rather than validated diagnostic thresholds, and not every functional test on the market is well supported.
