Why Are My Labs Normal When I Don't Feel Well?
Normal is a statistical statement about a population, not a clinical statement about you. Here is what a reference range actually represents — and what to do next.

How a reference range is actually built
A laboratory reference range is usually derived from the middle 95% of results in a reference population. It describes what is common in that group — not what is healthy, and not what is optimal for you. By construction, one in twenty healthy people falls outside it, and plenty of unwell people fall inside it.
When the population sampled is a general adult population, in which insulin resistance, subclinical thyroid dysfunction, and nutrient insufficiency are common, the range widens to accommodate them.
Normal versus optimal, in practice

The second reason: it was never tested
Often the problem is not interpretation but scope. A normal TSH says nothing about Free T3, Reverse T3, or thyroid antibodies. A normal CBC says nothing about ferritin. A normal A1C says nothing about fasting insulin. "All normal" frequently means "everything we happened to order was normal."

- 2.Look at where each result falls within its range, not simply whether it is inside it.
- 3.Identify which relevant markers were never measured and add them.
- 4.Draw them together, fasting and in the morning, so the pattern can be read as a whole.
- 5.Have the results interpreted in the context of your symptoms and history.
Frequently asked questions
Does a normal lab result mean nothing is wrong?
No. It means the measured values fell within a population-derived range. It does not mean the values are optimal for you, and it says nothing about markers that were never ordered.
Should I ask for a repeat test?
Often yes, particularly for markers that fluctuate — thyroid hormones, hs-CRP, and sex hormones. A single value drawn during illness, poor sleep, or an unusual week may not represent your baseline.
